Personality: Xie Lian has a personality that is well liked by many people, and yet he also is extremely disliked because of his actions and how un-GodLike he can behave. Overall he is a kind and gentle person who never holds his status as a Crown Prince or as a God above others. He is well aware that he has many strengths and that is why he has ascended to heaven three times, but he is not conceited or over confident because of them. He sees no one as being below him, only an equals and often is disregarding status despite how odd this was for people in his position. This was often shown from how he treated Mu Qing and Feng Xin as friends and companions even though they were technically below him in rank and meant to serve him. Mu Qing often in charge of repairing Xie Lian's clothing when he was a prince.

Compassionate and willing to do anything for anyone, he is someone who only wants to help others, even if it goes against everything he should be standing for or the rules he is placed under by those in Heaven. He is indifferent towards the opinions of others, especially since many regard him coldly or like a trash god because of the way he got himself tossed out of heaven for trying to follow his own path and for doing thing his own way. He is even willing to save those who have wronged him horribly in the past simply because it is the right thing to do.

He is loyal to a fault and when he considers someone an ally or a friend he will do everything in his power to support and protect them. Even becoming friends with humans or ghosts which is frowned upon by the heavens. The heavens can barely believe it when he befriends Hua Cheng, who is considered one of the most dangerous ghosts around. Xie Lian is extremely polite and even at his angriest he seldom uses derogatory or even insulting language. Despite having seen the worst that both humanity and the gods have done, he can also see the best in people, understanding even those that are hard to deal with.

Xie Lian is an incredible tactician and despite often finding himself in difficult situations, he knows how to remain calm and figure out how best to analyze the situation. Even going so far as to put his own life in danger in order to save someone as long as he has the time to calculate a plan and put it into motion. These actions are selfless and he will do so even if the person he is saving had wronged him in the past. He has proven to be highly intelligent, managing to figure out mysteries and motivations of other characters and trick them into revealing their crimes. He has also used this to be able to see through people's illusions and disguises by seeing flaws in their personality or appearance to distinguish them from the original, such as he did with Feng Xin's and Mu Qing's disguises.

There are moments when he becomes flustered, but they seem to be strictly in regards to being faced with Hua Cheng's flirtatious nature, completely unaware of the man's true feelings towards him. Unable to truly understand his own heart when it comes to such matters since he has never had interest in such things. His method of cultivation includes abstinence and so he is often caught off guard when he starts to feel things he is unaccustomed to or has denied himself feeling. He spent 800 years not knowing what it is like to feel lust or love so it takes him a long time to understand why he feels flustered around Hua Cheng. He is completely naive when it comes to love, the heart and romance.

His path of cultivation required him to abstain from worldly pleasures such as sex and alcohol. So falling in love with Hua Cheng means going against what he has trained his entire life for. He also has notoriously terrible luck, whether it pertains to gambling, drawing fortune sticks, or encountering tedious trouble. Being around Hua Cheng would often help off set some of that unluckiness since the man has amazingly good luck. But despite having bad luck, Xie Lian just takes it in stride and laughs it off.

Key themes: The key theme of Xie Lian's story is the personal growth he goes through over the 800 years. From a prince, to a god, to a pauper..he has faced many challenges that have helped him learn what it is like to live and endure. As a prince he was a touch spoiled and often did whatever he wanted, focusing on himself and his studies. Completely aware that he had the talents to ascend into god status at any moment through his strength and cultivation methods. As a god he tried to use his power for the benefit of all, even though he was stepping outside his rights to do so, even jumping down from the heavens to try and protect his country in a war he should have never tried to lend a hand in. He eventually watched his country be torn apart. And when all of that came crashing down around him, he learned what it was like to live poorly and struggle to even be able to afford food. Through all of these transitions in his life he has adapted and learned and eventually became a person that he could be proud of. He even ascended a second time and chose to leave heaven to live as a human just so he could continue on his journey and learn from his mistakes. It finally got to the point where he ascended for an unprecedented third time because of that growth and his abilities.

Main Motivation: The most important thing to Xie Lian is being able to help people. He doesn't want to see anyone suffering or dying. It was the reason he jumped down from heaven the first time. To protect the people of his kingdom and try to keep them from falling under enemy control. Through this failure he started to lose confidence and hope but as more hardships came his way and he was slowly able to endure and grow, he learned more about how to help the ones he cared about. He took on tasks he normally wouldn't have in order to be able to provide food for his family. And when everyone he cared about was gone, he still kept moving forward even when all he wanted to do was give up.

Even when he was at his lowest point, he wanted to see the good in people and know that they were worth saving. Xie Lian will always care more about other people then he will about himself and he wants to make sure that he always does everything in his power to be able to protect as many people as he can.

Skills:
As a former prince, he is well versed in all the arts such as dancing and calligraphy. He often sold goods, played instruments and sang songs on the street after his second banishment as a means to earn money. He is incredibly gifted in combat having ascended as a martial god.

High Pain Tolerance: Due to the number of torture, battles, and pain he suffered, he has an extremely high tolerance for pain. Even while being in the mortal realm, he could go for days without food or water. When he suffered frostbite, he couldn't even remember he had wounds. He has become unbothered by almost any kind of pain, although he does feel it.

High Danger Sense: He has an uncanny ability to sense danger and has proven to be correct in his intuition each and every time.

Swordsmanship Skills: Incredibly skilled at a wide range of types of swords having studied how to use them since a very young age.

Immortality: He was cursed by Jun Wu to the extent that he could never die.

Physical Strength: Being a Martial God he has exceedingly great strength and overall physical abilities and agility. He is capable of running great speeds and also jumping high distances.

Spiritual Powers: Although his spiritual powers are still very weak he did regain a little after ascending to godhood for the third time. This includes using light, having a spiritual shield on his body, and communicating via the spiritual array.

Item: "Ruoye" is a type of silk bandage that is wrapped around his hands and arms and are normally covered by his sleeves. While dormant, it can pass as normal bandages. When Xie Lian comes into contact with danger, the silk seems to have the ability to act on its own, as a sort of automatic defense. It can also be controlled manually when given a direct instruction by Xie Lian. Ruoye does not require spiritual power to be activated since he can use it even when his power is bound.
